Welcome to the 2020/21 Academic Year
Company Legal Name Change
As of 1 September 2020, the legal name of our company has changed from Open College Network Yorkshire and Humber Region to Skills and Education Group Access.
However, we are still trading as Certa Access, meaning all of our branding will remain the same. You do not need to edit any of your materials as the Certa Access brand is unchanged.
Contacting the Team
We have changed our email addresses: instead of @certa.org.uk it will be @skillsedugroup.co.uk
In order for your enquiry to be dealt with in a timely manner, the AVA team will be contacting you and responding to your email enquiries using the firstname.lastname@example.org address. All initial enquiry emails that come into Gill or Susanne’s email addresses will be responded to from this address so that someone in the Access team can answer your enquiry quickly.
Registration of Students 2020/21
Please remember that it is a QAA requirement that all students are registered within 42 days of commencement of their course (six weeks) and subsequently registered to their chosen units within 84 days (12 weeks) of the start date of their course.
It is also important to remember that, once you have registered your students and allocated the correct units, you will need to generate the Recommendation for Award of Credit (RAC). This is also an opportunity to ensure that names are spelt correctly (please remind students that this is what will appear on their certificate) and that the units have been allocated as agreed with the student. Your external moderator will be checking that this has been done at their first moderation visit and any changes at a later date may have an impact on your Centre risk rating.
There is a new look to the units when registering your students. We have added the Prefix to the beginning of the Unit, so instead of just seeing "Academic Writing Skills", you will see "Study Skills: Academic Writing Skills". Hopefully this will make things a lot clearer for registrations.
We have also added Grading Descriptors to the Graded Units. This follows the requirements of QAA over the ERF process and should help with your Assessments and overall Grading.
New Diplomas for 2020/21
We are delighted to have five new Access to HE Diplomas available this academic year. These Diplomas have been designed to meet regional needs and enable students to progress to university courses including Policing, Social Work, Creative Performance and Climate Science.
Other Diploma Information
We would also like to remind you about two additional Diplomas that were approved in September 2019 and are available for you to offer to your students:
- Access to HE Diploma (Criminal Justice)
- Access to HE Diploma (Psychology)
We also have a range of ‘Pre-Access’ qualifications, available through our sister charity, Skills and Education Group Awards. These qualifications are a perfect introduction for learners that may not be ready for a level 3 Access to HE Diploma. More details of our pre-Access offer can be found here.
Modification of Units
We have had several requests over the summer for modifications to units and we will be holding a panel meeting in October to consider these requests – please find more details here.
We have decided to resurrect the AVA Clinics that some of you found useful over the summer. These will take place every Tuesday at 12:30pm from Tuesday 6th October, and will continue for the rest of the term.
In each clinic, we will bring you any updates from QAA and information about how the academic year will progress. If you have any questions/issues that you would like addressing, please feel free to email us and we will add them to the agenda.
There is no need to book your place in advance of these clinics - simply 'drop in' using the following details:

Professional Development Events – Autumn 2020
The Skills and Education Group offer a wide range of Professional Development events, which we would encourage you to consider. If you are a member of Skills and Education Group, you may be eligible for free spaces included within your membership.
Browse all of the Group's upcoming events here.
Bespoke CPD Events
In addition to the Group's professional development offer, bespoke CPD events for Access to HE Diploma tutors can be arranged at the Provider's premises or online. If this is something you would like to consider, please do contact email@example.com
We will shortly be sending annual Quality Summary Reports to all Access to HE Providers. These reports gather together all areas of good practice, recommendations and required actions from all Diplomas across the last academic year. This year, we will also be including a summary of wrap-around, Portal and certification issues by Diploma, so that we can then support teams and colleges through training and guidance for a successful 2020/21 registration and certification period.
Over the coming weeks, we will also be making our usual contact with senior management within Centres to arrange a courtesy quality and curriculum planning meeting.
We'll be in touch
Customer service is our no.1 priority at Certa Access. Our Relationship Managers are always happy to discuss how we can support your Access provision further and will be able to provide more information about our Diplomas. To schedule an appointment, please contact Kaye Jackson or Bernadette Done.
We hope to speak to you soon, whether in-person, virtually or over the phone, and we hope you have a successful term.
