With so much focus on STEM careers these days, the value of Humanities courses can be overlooked. However, it should be remembered that these courses can be highly rewarding and lead to fulfilling careers beyond.
We were delighted to hear that two students from Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education had excellent experiences on the Humanities and Social Sciences Access to HE Diploma and are now progressing on to higher education.
Chloe – graduated July 2018
As a person who has spent more time out of education than in it, I was very nervous about applying. All the teaching staff go above and beyond to help support you through the course and get you to where you want to be.
Learning how to write academically, how to present myself and communicate effectively are all things that this course offered me. Learning how to be disciplined and work to deadlines is something that has gone on to be a life saver within higher education.
The course was a brilliant opportunity! It opens so many doors and offers you an experience you will never forget. I definitely finished the course a more confident and positive person than when I started, it was the best thing I could have done for myself.
I never imagined that this course would be the key to me living in an amazing city like Leeds, studying for a degree I never imagined I could do.
Star-Rea – graduated July 2019
I knew my whole life I wanted to be a social worker and wanted to be someone my family needed when I was younger but I thought I had missed my opportunity and instead tormented myself with what could have been. In 2018 I had a passing thought to enquire about getting onto a social work course. Out of all the universities I rang, Grimsby was the most helpful and explained to me about the Access course that would enable me to progress on to a social work course in the future.
In the first couple of weeks of being on the Access course I started to find myself again: not the old me, but a new me. I was obtaining good grades and this made me feel a great sense of achievement and belonging. I also gained many lifelong friends. I was even elected to the role of student representative. The access course has supported me through all of the trials and tribulations I have faced and provided motivation. I believe my future now looks bright. I am due to begin a BA degree in social work at Hull University in September.
I cannot thank the access course and the staff enough for helping me get so close to my dream and I will never forget the time spent and the people met whilst attending. I value the amazing lessons that gave me insight. I cherish all the laughs and support that have enabled me to become a stronger and more confident version of myself.
